Portrait Mode
In landscape mode (when your phone is rotated 90 degrees), your phone's notification bar can block your fingers during gameplay.
Try changing the screen orientation option in Settings -> System to portrait.
You can also use the Guided Access mode on iOS or the App Pinning feature on some Android phones.
